Friends

This past weekend I had the pleasure of sitting with an old friend. I sadly admit that this has become an ever-decreasing phenomenon in my life. It seems that my life and the schedule it imposes has somehow snuffed out any “real” time; time that we all need to slow down, sit down, and just spend a little time investing in our friends. Our friends, after all, are the fence posts that form the lines of demarcation that tend to keep us from danger, mark turning points and forks in our paths, show us the way to the gates through which we pass, and remind us that someone has gone before us and given some thought to the lay of the land. Sitting there across from him, the sounds of waiters, clanging dishes and spoons in the air, we laughed the way only old friends can laugh. There’s a tone to the laughter of old friends unknown to Comedy Central. Notes of familiarity, comfort, and scars of battles past rang about the booth where we sat.

Our lives today seem to fly by without a thought or concern for those that, during slower, more thoughtful times, mean the most to us. What is it within my soul that so easily forgets about these times and need for them? What is it about my modus operandi that allows me to flippantly write all this off as just a luxury reserved for those with nothing to do, nowhere to be, more free time to blow, or in my case, preparing to leave the country for an extended period of time?

I’m writing this to apologize to friends who don’t require apologies, who understand how our lives unravel and who wouldn’t allow me to finish this sentence if we were face-to-face. Nonetheless, I am dreadfully sorry that I’ve lost track of what meant the most to us. I’ve tried making promises in the past that we’d be closer in the future. But, those few hours together the other day reminded me: we hadn’t grown apart. True friends have a way of mitigating loss. There are things that can’t be eroded by time or distance. For those, I am eternally grateful. Thank you Lord for holding us in your hand.
